Once ruled by the great chalukyas and the Vijayanagar empire now finds itself in the amidst of unemployment, poverty. North Karnataka, a region rich in history and culture, has been a hidden asset of untapped potential. from majestic ruins of Hampi to incredible Badami caves, this region has a story to tell.
A Legacy of neglect
While the South Karnataka prospered, 13 districts of North Karnataka continue to struggle till day. Despite having the required resources the region lacks Quality Education, Infrastructure and industrial investment. This has resulted in a brain drain leaving behind a void that reflects each year in the disheartening SSLC and PUC results.
The absence of opportunities has not only triggered brain drain but has also given rise to a disturbing trend—individuals who declare themselves as ‘Muthyas’ exploiting the ignorance and desperation of the masses. These self-styled figures, far from being heroes, mislead people with false promises and pseudo-spirituality, becoming symbols of the very stagnation that holds the region back
The Rise of Muthyas
Their rise is not just a symptom of the region’s stagnation—it’s a consequence of the lack of education, poor infrastructure, and unemployment. They take advantage of the frustrations and confusion of the people, especially the vulnerable and uneducated. By presenting themselves as spiritual leaders or problem-solvers, they manipulate people into following them, often demanding money or blind obedience in return for empty promises. Also the Muthyas have become a tool for political gain. Politicians, in their quest for votes, have often supported these figures, seeing them as a means to rally the masses. The support is not rooted in genuine belief but in political calculations.
Take, for instance, Rashid Muthya, a man who claims to have cured a third-stage cancer patient—all through his so-called “spiritual powers”. He posts videos on Instagram, showcasing his so-called “miracles” and promises to cure anyone from terminal illnesses if they simply follow his advice.
There is also a man who believes himself to be “Spiderman”—literally. This individual roams the streets, jumping from place to place, creating chaos and confusion. With a jeep fitted with sirens, he attracts attention wherever he goes, claiming he is on a mission to “save” people. His delusional behavior has become a spectacle, and yet, he too has gained a following—some believing he truly possesses supernatural abilities.
Shifting the Narrative: The Power of Awareness and Education
The influence of such figures highlights a deeper issue—the absence of critical thinking and education. In North Karnataka, where resources are scarce and opportunities even scarcer, the public is often forced to place their trust in quick fixes and miracle solutions. However, the real cure for the region’s problems lies in empowering the people with knowledge and awareness.
Instead of blindly following these so-called leaders, the youth must be educated to question unverified claims, focus on logical reasoning, and seek professional help in matters of health, career, and personal growth. Schools, colleges, and community centers should play a pivotal role in fostering these values. Critical thinking must be integrated into the education system, not just as a subject, but as a mindset.
A Hopeful Future: Reclaiming North Karnataka’s Potential
While local efforts are crucial, the role of the government and authorities cannot be overlooked. It’s essential to establish policies that regulate such fraudulent activities and hold these figures accountable. Legal action against those who make false medical claims or incite public fear should be part of a larger framework to protect the public.
The road ahead is long, but it is not without hope. With the right combination of education, community action, and government intervention, North Karnataka can rise above the influence of Muthyas and steer towards a future of prosperity and self-sufficiency.
